| Avebury Stone Circle |

These stone circles and their surrounding ditches and banks were constructed in Neolithic times. An avenue of 200 paired stones lead from the south entrance to another ceremonial, The Sanctuary, a short distance away, which consists of a series of eccentric stone rings. Avebury is a World Heritage site. |

| Silbury Hill |

Dating from 2700 BC, this is the largest man-made prehistoric mound in Europe. Standing 130 feet high and covering over 5 acres, its construction, with baskets, antler picks and shoulder-blade shovels, was an amzing feat and despite more than two centuries of investigation, its purpose remains a mystery. |

A flight of 29 locks which raises the water level 72 metres in a distance of 2.5 miles. The whole flight was completely restored during the 1980s and re-opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 1990. A popular spot offering facilities for walkers, cyclists, anglers and picnic parties. |

Carved into the chalk hillsides, these can be seen at Roundway Hill (millenium project, cut in 1999), Alton Barnes (cut in 1812 and visible for up to 20 miles), Hackpen Hill (cut in 1838 to commemorate the coronation of Queen Victoria), Pewsey Hill (cut in 1937 to commemorate the coronation, from an early original), Marlborough (cut in 1804 by the boys of Marlborough School) and Westbury. |

| There are many historical sites around Devizes, such as the Georgian city of Bath, the National Trust village of Lacock, Savernake Forest with it's long Grand Avenue flanked with towering beeches. Bowood House is nearby, asares Avebury Manor and Longleat House. |
